According to the EPA, poor indoor air quality is one of the top five environmental health risks. Anyone can be affected by indoor pollutants, but for asthma and allergy sufferers, poor indoor air quality can make life miserable. Fortunately, there are ways to clean the air inside your home and create a healthier environment for you and your family.
The first step is to attempt to control the pollutants that get inside your home. Whether your pollutants come from inside or outside the home, steps may be taken to eliminate or lessen them, and improved ventilation may be introduced to bring fresh air into your home. However, if local weather conditions, allergen levels, or interior contaminants continue to pollute your home, an air-cleaning device is the answer.
There are two categories of indoor air pollutants: particulate matter and gaseous pollutants. Particulate matter is very common and includes things like pollen, pet dander, smoke, dust, molds, dust mites, and more. Gaseous pollutants can include gas stoves, exhaust, and off-gassing from paint, adhesives, pesticides, cleaning products, and more. Both types of pollutants can exacerbate allergy and asthma symptoms.
There are many proven types of air cleaners. Electronic air cleaners, also known as electrostatic precipitators, collect particulate matter on metal collection plates. Particulates pass through an ionization section to receive an electric charge and are attracted to the collection plates. Ion generators work similarly, charging particulates so that they may more easily settle and collect on furniture and walls instead of remaining airborne. Electronic air cleaners can be installed in your HVAC ductwork to become part of your heating and cooling system, or they can be purchased as separate, portable units. Other types of air cleaners include mechanical air filters, gas-phase air filters, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) cleaners, and photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) cleaners.
