Here’s How to Prevent Basement Flooding in Your Home

With spring on the way, the weather in San Antonio can take a rainy turn. This can put your basement at risk of becoming flooded, resulting in costly water damage to your home and belongings. You can prevent basement flooding by taking the following precautions.

Seal Up Foundation Cracks

Check for gaps and cracks in your home’s foundation, and seal up any that you find. Water can get in through these openings and flood your basement. You should also check the floor and walls inside your basement for cracks, and make sure these are sealed as soon as possible.

Extend Your Downspouts

Your downspouts keep rainwater from flowing near your home’s foundation, which lowers the risk of your basement flooding. Consider attaching extensions to these to put more distance between them and your home. Ideally, downspouts should carry water at least 10 feet from your home.

Clear Your Gutters and Downspouts

Your downspouts can’t do their job when they’re clogged with debris. Your gutters also need to be clear to allow rainwater to pass through them and on to the downspouts. If you have leaves, twigs or other debris filling up your gutters and downspouts, clear them away.

Cover Window Wells

If your basement has window wells, water can seep in around them and get into your home. Clear debris away from these wells, and put covers over them to prevent rain from filling them up. Choose covers that will still let light into your basement, such as clear acrylic ones.

Check Your Sump Pump

If your home has a sump pump, get rid of any debris in its well to prevent blockages and allow drainage. If your sump pump is portable, hook it up to a power source in the lowest area of your basement. Consider having a generator on hand in case you lose power. This helps ensure that your sump pump will continue working.
